April was a month of exploration at the College & Career Readiness Center with students receiving visits from industry experts and several colleges to get informed about their options after high school.
Jeremy Killbrew, a representative from the Local 502 Plumbers, Pipefitters, & Service Technicians Union, spoke to South Central and Corydon Central High School students about post-secondary opportunities available in a high-wage and competitive profession. Pursuing a union trade is an excellent opportunity for students who don’t want to go to a traditional four-year college but still want to earn a higher education and have a profession that offers a great salary, retirement plan, health insurance, and career advancement.
Meanwhile, for students considering a college pathway, Indiana Tech College visited Corydon Central High School to share information about a variety of flexible online career programs. They highlighted professions such as medical coding, cybersecurity, and construction management and the programs they offer to obtain the skills required for these different careers.
UofL School of Dentistry also met with students interested in the dental field, sharing with them the rigorous coursework and competitive admission requirements for several of their dental programs. They also shared the various programs offered at UofL including dental assisting, dental hygiene, doctorate degrees and training in oral surgery.
Opportunities such as these show students there are many options available to them and now is the time to start considering what they want their future to look like in terms of college, trade professions, training programs, etc. Through the CCR Center it’s our mission and hope students graduate from South Harrison having a better grasp on careers that interest them, the tools to pursue that industry and the drive to become a great employee and an even better person.
