Last Tuesday, students throughout South Harrison’s district returned to school for another year of learning. Many entered a school quite different from the one they had left at the end of the previous year. While construction is still ongoing in many parts of the district, numerous projects were either completed or made significant progress over summer break.

Many of these construction projects focused on modernizing campuses, creating more welcoming environments, and improving logistical and organizational features. Beyond giving buildings a fresh look, many projects were completed with a deeper purpose in mind; creating spaces where students feel safe, supported, and set up for success.

Mr. Ledford's workshop at South Central Jr.-Sr. High School is one of many classrooms that received a makeover. The ceiling was raised, garage doors were added, and the workshop was expanded. This allows more room for construction pathway students to build both inside and outside the workshop. Over at Corydon Central High School, a new health sciences lab was added with support from the Harrison County Community Foundation. The lab is now equipped with medical tools and practice dummies, enabling students in the health sciences pathway to put their skills to the test.

Meanwhile, a few schools have already taken advantage of their freshly paved parking lots and new building additions to help families cruise through car rider lines with ease. Car riders at Heth-Washington are enjoying a new drop-off area with an updated patio and added awning to keep students covered during inclement weather. At South Central Elementary, the new parking lot is helping implement a smoother traffic pattern for morning drop-off.

Our bus drivers have also benefited from the recent transportation upgrades, which include a new transportation and maintenance building located behind Corydon Central High School. This facility now serves as the central hub for bus operations, repairs, and maintenance, as well as housing the building maintenance staff and repair equipment.

Beyond transportation improvements, the district is making steady progress on several additional construction projects aimed at enhancing the overall learning environment.

At elementary school campuses, new playgrounds are being installed with rubberized surfaces to improve safety and include more accessible equipment for all children to enjoy. Next to the central office, a brand new Harrison County Exceptional Learners Cooperative building is still under construction, with plans to demolish the old structure. Wayfinder signage is also expected to be installed within the upcoming months to provide clearer and more precise directions for families and visitors navigating the schools.

The ongoing improvements throughout South Harrison’s district reflect a strong commitment to creating an environment that is both welcoming and engaging for every student. While some projects are still in progress, the completed upgrades are already making a difference for students and staff across the district. South Harrison believes that by investing in our learning environments, it opens the door for more opportunities, and creates a safe space for every student to reach their full potential.
