One thing that makes students and staff at South Harrison so special is their willingness to challenge themselves to reach new heights in both their academic and professional careers. With Advanced Placement course offerings expanding, and the number of AP participants and scholars increasing, there is a lot for students and staff to be proud of.
During the 2024–2025 school year, sophomores, juniors and seniors across the district enrolled in 11 AP courses and took a total of 231 exams. Of those, 79% earned a score of 3 or higher. This marks a significant increase from the 79 exams taken last school year and highlights the growing confidence and determination of our students. Most notably, 18 students became designated AP Scholars.
These students deserve recognition not only for achieving a high score, but for also earning college credit before ever stepping foot on to their college campus. For these credits to apply, the college they are attending must recognize their score as the mastery of a college course and award them credit. This incredible opportunity, allows students to better prepare themselves for college and set them apart from others in their major.
Students aren’t the only ones that deserve celebrating, our teachers do too. These opportunities are made possible by our devoted and hardworking teachers. In order to teach an AP course, teachers go through extensive training with the College Board. They must complete the AP Course Audit process, attend professional development sessions, and obtain course specific teaching requirements to reach qualification standards. By teachers going through this strenuous process, it truly shows their dedication to the success of their students.
Thanks to the growing number of qualified AP educators, students at South Central Jr-Sr High School are now being offered two courses taught by Kris Davis and Sam Voyles; AP Calculus and AP Language and Composition. They are joined by several other AP instructors across the district:
Mrs. Bethany Brown
Mrs. Sabrina Schreck
Mrs. Tiffany Stansbury
Mrs. Michelle Miller
Mrs. Cheryl Johnson
Mr. Kyle Jones
Mr. Eric Rowland
Mrs. Stephanie Richardson
Dr. William Royalty; and
Mrs. Carol Vaughn
Additionally, South Harrison is thankful for the Harrison County Community Foundation for covering the cost of exam fees. Thanks to their generosity, students can earn college credits in various AP courses, without the financial burden of having to pay multiple exam fees. Their unwavering support and contributions to the success of all students, never goes unnoticed.
South Harrison Community School Corporation strives to provide a learning environment that inspires both our students and staff to never stop reaching for new heights in both their academic and professional careers. It is our hope that students not only challenge themselves academically but will feel empowered to do so through opportunities like the AP program. From students who aren’t afraid of a good challenge, to the teachers who inspire them by going above and beyond, to the support of our community, South Harrison continues to encourage growth, provide opportunity, and fuel academic excellence.
